Terra matta returns to Australia

The autobiography of Vincenzo Rabito (1899-1981), 1027 closely-packed pages of vivid description in a mix of Italian, Sicilian dialect and rabitese, has appeared in versions for the page (Terra matta, Einaudi 2007), stage (directed and performed by Vincenzo Pirrotta) and screen (terramatta;, directed by Costanza Quatriglio with a script by her and Chiara Ottaviano), presented in Australia in 2013 and 2015. A second, very different, version for the stage, by the actor-director Stefano Panzeri, will be performed in Melbourne on Tuesday  13 March  2018  at 6:30pm at the Museo Italiano in Carlton (free entry; RSVP essential). It will also be presented, under the title Oltreoceano, in Sydney on Friday 16 March at 6.30pm at the Canada Bay Club, incorporating not only extracts from Rabito’s text but also the stories of emigration offered by Italian members of the audiences at Panzeri’s performances in Europe and Latin America.

Terra matta in Sydney: 17-19 Dec 2015

UnknownAlready a best-selling book published by Einaudi and an acclaimed film with script by Chiara Ottaviano and the director Costanza Quatriglio, Terra matta, the autobiography of a Sicilian autodidact, Vincenzo Rabito, will be presented in a version for the stage by Vincenzo Pirrotta and the Teatro Stabile di Catania at the Italian Forum Cultural Centre, 23 Norton Street, Leichhardt, NSW, on 17-19 December 2015 (times and booking here). The extraordinary story of Terra matta is the topic of a special issue of the Journal of Modern Italian Studies. Vincenzo Rabito’s youngest son, Giovanni, has described its origins and compared it with the second, unpublished, version of his life that his father also spent his retirement writing.

The story of Terra matta

rmis20.v018.i02.coverThose who know Vincenzo Rabito’s autobiography published as Terra matta (Einaudi, 2007) or have seen the film Terramatta; Il Novecento italiano di Vincenzo Rabito analfabeta siciliano (2012) will be interested in the recent special issue of the Journal of Modern Italian Studies (2014, vol. 19, no.3) dedicated to the analysis of both book and film. The highlights are the accounts by the editors of the original typescript, Luca Ricci and Evelina Santangelo, of their work in making the text accessible to a wide readership, and the descriptions by the co-screenwriters Chiara Ottaviano (producer) and Costanza Quatriglio (director) of the making of the film. Bernadette Luciano and Susanna Scarparo set Terramatta; in the context of Quatriglio’s other work; and Giovanni Rabito explores some of the differences between his father’s first and second (unpublished) autobiographies.

Descrive anche il suo lavoro per creare l’Archivio degli Iblei, opera corale online della storia di quella parte della Sicilia sud-orientale da cui proveniva l’autore di Terra matta.

Nel suo lavoro all’Archivio diaristico nazionale a Pieve Santo Stefano (il paese toscano distrutto nel 1944, la cui storia è stata raccontata da uno dei suoi cittadini più famosi, Amintore Fanfani, nel suo Una Pieve in Italia), Luca Ricci ha curato diversi testi di scrittori non-professionisti per la pubblicazione. Evelina Santangelo è una scrittrice siciliana: il suo romanzo più recente è Cose da pazzi (Einaudi, 2012).

Apart from his role as the narrator in terramatta;, Roberto has taken part in many of the most successful Italian films and TV series in recent years, including Nanni Moretti’s La stanza del figlio, Giuseppe Tornatore’s Stanno tutti bene, and the Salvo Montalbano series where he played the journalist Nicolò Zito. He is also a scriptwriter (Distretto di polizia, Le amiche del cuore) and the author of L’ospedale della lingua italiana (dove le parole usurpate dalle omologhe americane trovano cura e conforto) (2012).

Terra matta in Melbourne: 3 December

UnknownThe prize-winning film terramatta;, based on Terra matta, the autobiography of Vincenzo Rabito which was awarded the Premio Pieve in 2000, will be shown in Melbourne at the Italian Institute of Culture on 3 December 2013 (click for details of time and venue). As our earlier post indicated, the film will also be shown at the ACIS Conference in Adelaide on 4 December. Both the book and the DVD are available for purchase in Australia and can be bought here.
